Quran Verses on Women:

  • Surah An-Nisa (4:1): "O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer."
  • Surah An-Nisa (4:3): "And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]."
  • Surah An-Nisa (4:7): "For men is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, be it little or much - an obligatory share."
  • Surah An-Nisa (4:11): "Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females..."
  • Surah An-Nisa (4:19): "O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness..."
  • Surah An-Nisa (4:34): "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them..."
  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:228): "Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to them [wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]..."
  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:229): "Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah..."
  • Surah An-Nur (24:31): "And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women..."
  • Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35): "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward."
  • Surah At-Talaq (65:4): "And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birth..."

Hadith on Women:

  • Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 62, Hadith 81: Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A woman should not travel except with a Dhu-Mahram (her husband or a man with whom she cannot marry), and no man may visit her except in the presence of a Dhu-Mahram."
  • Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 62, Hadith 114: Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbor, and I advise you to take care of the women, for they are created from a rib and the most crooked portion of the rib is its upper part; if you try to straighten it, it will break, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so I urge you to take care of the women."
  • Sahih Muslim, Book 8, Hadith 3327: Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
  • Sahih Muslim, Book 8, Hadith 3469: Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: "The woman is like a rib; if you try to straighten her, she will break. So if you want to get benefit from her, do so while she still has some crookedness."
  • Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 11, Hadith 2142: Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife."
  • Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 10, Hadith 1162: Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock. A man is a shepherd and he is responsible for those in his care. A woman is a shepherd in her husband’s house and she is responsible for those in her care."
  • Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 67, Hadith 119: Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best women are the women of the Ansar, for their modesty did not prevent them from learning the religion."
  • Sahih Muslim, Book 36, Hadith 6603: Narrated Aisha: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives."
  • Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 9, Hadith 1851: Narrated Abu Musa: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, or her religion. So choose the one who is religious, may your hands be rubbed with dust (i.e., may you prosper)."
